I've been putting this one off as
it's a bit out of the way for me. Still, it was Philip's
birthday and
that was where he wanted to go, so I grudgingly said we could - Philip
doesn't drive so I have THE POWER over him!
OK, I was
wrong. It is a long time since I last made a 'discovery' in the East
Kent area - thought I knew them all - but this is FABULOUS FOOD.
It
was once a mere country pub with pub grub of reasonable quality. For
those of you who like to go to a pub for a meal (as do I sometimes)
this must disappoint - it is NOT a pub any more - though it does have a
bar and I'm sure they would make you welcome if you just went in for a
pint. This, however, is a seriously good restaurant - I mean SERIOUSLY!
The
quality of food and the artistic presentation must make it a realistic
candidate for a Michelin Star if they covet one. You will need to book
but do yourself a favour and give it a try - you'll be back again, I
reckon!

We had a really delightful time at The Marquis and were most impressed. The decor and ambience are quite breathtaking. What a total transformation from a pub - more like an upmarket London restaurant. The bedrooms are gorgeous, the food superb, service charming and it had a nice 'buzzy' atmosphere. The Marquis should really fill a niche as there is nothing to match it in this area.

Dear Sirs,
We have just got home and we felt obliged to send you an email regarding your
hotel. Without doubt it is one of the nicest and friendliest hotels we
have ever stayed in. In particular the young man (sorry we didn't catch
his name) who dealt with us throughout was absolutely perfect, he certainly is
in the right job, and I feel you are very lucky to have him on board. He
absolutely made our stay perfect.
We also ate at the restaurant and the food was excellent and again the service
was faultless.
We certainly hope to be able to return again if we are ever in Dover.

I was expecting it to be pretty much the old Marquis with perhaps a new bar top and a brassiere. You can imagine my surprise when I walked in and saw the boutique décor. The staff were quietly professional in the way you can only get away with if you know what you're doing. It may not be cheap but if you want a cheap meal and a cheap room, I've a list of cheap places I can suggest where the food will be basic ballast for the tank and the room will be adequate. What I struggle to do in this part of the world, on this side of the Channel, is find what they've created at The Marquis. I was pleasantly surprised and very impressed.

I came yesterday with my daughter (Mrs Lisa DIXON) for your Christmas Day lunch and although we had to depart at 16.30 hours (rather TOO EARLY) the meal, your warm welcome and hospitality was absolutely WONDERFUL so I am therefore writing to congratulate you on the NEW Marquis.
The contemporary décor blending with original brickwork in the restaurant enhances the ambience combining with a relaxed and informal welcoming lounge.
As a travel journalist with 45 years experience of dining out all across Europe (including Switzerland) I can truthfully say your new restaurant and the high standard of cuisine, combined with efficient and friendly service, does you full credit. So WE WILL RETURN!

I just wanted to drop a brief note to say that I along with my wife and friends we really enjoyed our lunch on Sunday. As this was the first time I have eaten in the restaurant, I was thoroughly impressed not only by the quality of the food (thank the Chef) but the service as well, it all exceeded my expectations.
You are only 40 once and I am really pleased I have picked the Marquis where I will celebrate my 40th with my friends and family on Saturday 23rd May, booking all 5 rooms above the restaurant has just made it that little bit more special.
I look forward to my next visit (definitely before May!) and in the meantime, best of luck with the business.
